Suzanne Geller, Head Teacher

My name is Suzanne Geller and I live in San Francisco. I grew up in the Caribbean, on an Island called Curacao. The island is Dutch and is 35 miles off of the coast of Venezuela. Because it is so close to South America and because the official language is Dutch, I grew up speaking four languages (Spanish, Dutch, English, and Papiamentu - the local language). Maybe I'll learn some Japanese next!

私の名前はスザンヌ・ゲラー。サンフランシスコに住んでいます。カリブ海にあるキュラソー島という島で育ちました。オランダ領に属すこの島はベネズェラ沖35マイル程のところにあります。
南アメリカにとても近いということ、それから公式言語がオランダ語であることから私はスペイン語、オランダ語、英語、パピアメント語という地元の言葉の4つの言語を話しながら育ちました。そうね、次は日本語を勉強しようかしら?

I have been teaching for ten years and enjoy learning along with my students. Some of the topics of study over the past few years included the San Francisco Bay, Archaeology in the American SouthWest, West Africa, and Bread Across Cultures. We learned history, literature, writing, science, and math as they related to these themes. Some of my favorite moments with my students included our camping trips excursions we hiked, laughed, and learned about the environment and ourselves. I also enjoy doing community service with students. We volunteered at soup kitchens, retirement homes, and a community garden. Over the past three years, I have taken students during the summer to Ecuador, Fiji, and Thailand to live in villages and do service projects in the communities. I love doing meaningful work with children.

私は10年間教えるという仕事をしながら私の生徒たちと一緒に学ぶことを楽しんでいます。ここ数年間で学んだトピックを振り返ると、サンフランシスコ湾のこと、アメリカ南西部の考古学、アフリカ西部について、それからパンについての比較文化学。こうしたテーマの下、歴史、文学、作文、科学、算数について学習しました。生徒たちと過ごす時間の中でもキャンプ旅行中のハイキング、一緒になって笑うこと、環境や自分たちについて振り返り考えるひとときなどが特に気に入っている思い出です。
また、生徒たちと行ったコミュニティサービスという活動も好きなことの一つ。スープ屋さん、老人ホーム、地域の菜園などでこれまでにボランティア活動を行いました。過去３年間には夏の間に生徒たちを連れてエクアドル、フィジー、そしてタイを訪れ、村で生活をし、現地のコミュニティに役立つプロジェクト活動を行いました。こうして子供たちと一緒に意義があると感じられることをするのが大好きなのです。
